Service Rates And Terms Content Development fees
Content and copyediting services are calculated at an hourly rate (with a one hour minimum). Under certain circumstances, fixed fees or monthly contract fees can be agreed upon. Rates specific to your project are quoted after
an initial
project consultation or review of sample materials. The Editorial Freelancers Association produces a list of common rates based on an annual survey of the membership. Rates vary
from project to project of course, depending on the specific task, the schedule, and other factors, but the list gives a useful sense of the industry norms. Please contact us with information about your project and we
will provide an estimate and a quote specifically for you.
Terms of Service:
- Fees are set by project or by the hour.
- Project pricing includes: a pre-determined number of meetings, research, brainstorming, necessary interviews, and of course, the writing (with above mentioned revisions).
- Not included: out-of-pocket expenses, out-of-area travel, elements considered design in nature (i.e., layout or special formatting), or accelerated delivery.
- If project is cancelled for any reason, completed work will be billed at hourly rate.
- We'll be happy to do a rush job (for a 50% surcharge).
- Delivery methods (unless otherwise specified): by email (MS Word attachment) or printed copy sent by U.S. mail.
- We retain the right to use the copy as promotional material (or you can pay the 100% premium for exclusivity.)
- Your copyright over completed work is in effect as soon as your account is paid in full.
Web Consulting fees
Consulting fees are based on an hourly rate dictated by the scope of work. For online-content development costs, see content development information above. For other Web consulting fees, the ranges are given by
broad function:

Indexing rates
Rates are quoted per-page or per-hour depending on the nature of the project. In general, a complex scholarly text will be at the higher end of the range than a basic trade book. And, as trade books themselves can vary
in intensity and depth, a major historical treatment or political biography will take more time and effort than a mass-market celebrity tell-all or cookbook.
-
Per-page rates: standard or rush. Rates can range, depending on the depth of the project, from the standard level
of $4.00 to $9.00 per indexable page to a rush level of between $7.00 to $10.00. If a book's pagination alters after the indexing has begun, a re-indexing fee will be applied. (This additional fee is per hour only).
-
Per-hour rates: standard or rush. Per-hour rates are quoted upon request and after review of sample material. If a project estimate is quoted per hour and a shift in pagination occurs,
then there is no additional re-indexing fee. Additional time required will simply be calculated at the quoted per-hour rate.
-
Flat fees: negotiable on a per-project basis under very limited circumstances. Please contact us directly to discuss this option.
-
Author consultations, index updates, and style guidelines development: For more information on these services, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Note on estimates: Estimates are
based on a variety of factors―complexity of the text, space and depth specifications for the index, schedule, and a page count of indexable materials. For more on indexable materials and depth of index, see the
discussion of schedule and index specifications in our Indexing FAQ.
The most informed estimate possible is made after the initial discussion, but a firm quote can only really be given once a sample section of the book has been
reviewed. (A chapter from the middle of the book is best for this purpose.) This review will not take very long at all―a matter of a couple of hours―so it will not unduly affect the schedule. The firmed-up quote
will seldom vary significantly from the original estimate, but it is important to know what is being worked on so that no one―especially the client―is taken by surprise further down the road.
Delivery and handling fees
When possible, materials are typically delivered via e-mail, which is cost free. If page proofs or
printed copies need to be returned or shipped to the client, FedEx or UPS will be used (whichever the client prefers). Fees for delivery services are added to the invoice total.
